Which Wines to Serve

Are you still thinking and debating on which wines are best to offer? Worry no more for here are some guides which you could offer before- and after-dinner parties.

Aperitif wines should be appetizing, satisfying, and ready to eat. Any light wine with refreshing acidity is a good choice, and there are many options. From prosecco to New World sparkling wines and champagne, sparkling wine is always available. For white wines, you can't go wrong with uncalibrated Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Noir

A Spanish Albariño, an Austrian Grüner Veltliner, or a dry to slightly dry Riesling is enough to impress someone. If you stick to red, try a somewhat chilled Beaujolais or Valpolicella. Both wines have acidity and fresh red fruit aromas and are just as refreshing as white wines. Don't forget Hong Kong's most underrated wine, Rosé. Provence Rosé's charming pale pink color is a lovely sight in itself.

After-dinner wine, on the other hand, is something to help you unwind after a meal. If you have room for dessert, a sweet wine, such as a late-harvest wine or wine made from dried grapes, complements pudding well. Alternatively, you can finish your meal with "liquid dessert". Dessert Wines  such as ice wine and noble-rot sweet wine with complex flavors are ideal. The key is to choose a wine with high acidity; otherwise, it will be too syrupy and cloying. Riesling is the best in this category, whether it's ice wine or noble-rot sweet wine (in Germany called Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese, BA or TBA for short). South Africa and the Loire Valley in France also produce excellent sweet wines from the Chenin Blanc grape.

Of course, you can drink your dinner wine as an after-dinner drink, but keep in mind that red wines don't go well with dessert since they would crash the wine's taste with their sweetness. And, after a particularly heavy meal, a glass of sparkling wine is most preferable to cleanse the palate. The acidity in the wine will help with digestion, which makes you feel less tired.
