Syrup Making Guide
Simple syrups are easy to make, so why opt for a pre-made one? Pre-made syrups can bring a lot to a cocktail and elevate the flavor profile of your drink. While many bartenders prefer to make their own syrups, there’s often difficulty in making unique syrups and consistency problems with homemade syrups. Don't be afraid to experiment with pre-made syrups--there are tasty options out there! Some of our favorites include orgeats, tiki-inspired syrups, lychee options, and syrups specifically designed for non-alcoholic cocktails.
Making syrup is a relatively simple process that can be done at home with just a few ingredients and some basic kitchen equipment. The most important thing to remember when making syrup is to use fresh, quality ingredients and to cook the syrup slowly over low heat to prevent it from scorching.
To make syrup, you will need:
-1 cup sugar
-1 cup water
-1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
-A saucepan or pot
-A candy thermometer (optional)
Instructions:
- Combine the sugar, water, and lemon juice in the saucepan or pot. stir gently to combine.
- Place the pan over low heat and cook the mixture until it comes to a boil. Allow the mixture to boil gently for 1 minute.
- Remove the pan from the heat and allow the syrup to cool slightly. Pour the syrup into a clean glass jar or container. The syrup will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
To store your syrup, you'll need a clean, airtight container. Glass is the best option, but plastic will also work. Be sure to label your syrup with the date it was made and the type of syrup it is. Store your syrup in a cool, dark place and it should last for several months.
Syrups are a concentrated form of sweetener that can be used to add flavor and sweetness to food and drinks. They are made by boiling down sugar or other sweeteners with water, and sometimes also include flavorings like fruits, spices, or herbs. Syrups can be used in many different ways, depending on their consistency. Some syrups, like honey, can be used as a spread or to sweeten tea or coffee. Thicker syrups may be used as toppings for pancakes, waffles, or ice cream. And still other syrups may be used as an ingredient in baking or cooking.
No matter how you use them, syrups can add an extra special touch to your favorite foods and drinks. So next time you're looking for a way to sweeten things up, don't forget about the syrup!
