UK gin has a long history dating back to the early 18th century. The first recorded mention of gin in England was in 1689. Gin became very popular in the UK during the early 18th century due to its low price and high alcohol content. By 1740, there were over 300 gin distilleries in London. Gin was so popular that it was often referred to as "Mother's Ruin".
In recent years, UK gin has seen a resurgence in popularity. This is due in part to the introduction of new and innovative gin brands such as Hendrick's, Monkey 47, and Bloom.
Did you know: The UK is the largest producer of gin in the world. In 2017, UK exports of gin totaled £1.9 billion.
