Becherovka is an herbal liqueur from the Czech Republic. It has a distinctively spicy flavor with notes of ginger, cloves, and anise. The recipe for Becherovka is a closely guarded secret, known only to a handful of people. The liqueur is named after its creator, Josef Vitus Becher.
Becherovka was first produced in 1807 in Karlovy Vary (also known as Carlsbad), a spa town in western Bohemia. At the time, Becher was a pharmacist who owned a small apothecary shop. He created the liqueur as a medicinal tonic and it quickly became popular among the town's visitors.
Becherovka is still produced in Karlovy Vary using the same secret recipe. The liqueur is made from a blend of over 20 different herbs and spices, including cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Becherovka is typically served neat or on the rocks. It can also be used in cocktails.
