Whether you want to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, job promotion, or any other milestone, it seems incomplete without a Champagne. A gentle click of Champagne glasses provides a touch of elegance and glamour to the event.

Champagne is a classic Sparkling Wine named after its origin site, "Champagne region," in northeastern France. So, its production process follows appellation rules, demanding particular vineyard practices or sourcing grapes from designated places.

The Champagne region's cool climate makes it hard to ripen the grapes, providing a perfect environment for growing grapes with high acidity levels. Therefore, it is ideal for preparing Champagne.

Although its origin is in France, Romans were the first ones who brought it to the French in the 5th Century. Since then, it has been considered the most preferred beverage by various rich and elite people in the world.

It has a precise sugar content recipe ensuring the completion of fermentation in two phases and generation of required bubbles. It needs a specific type of bottle that can withstand pressure building in it.

Before using England's coal-fired bottles, French refineries mostly lost 20 to 90% of bottles in the explosion due to chain reactions. And if glass withstands the gas pressure, there were still sediments collecting after the second fermentation in the bottle.

These sediments leave cloudy Wine and also disrupt its flavour. So, Veuve Clicquot developed the riddling process in the nineteenth century. In this, deposits could be collected in the bottle's neck and ejected with the Wine's pressure.

Though Veuve Clicquot tried to keep this secret, the riddling trick got out eventually. From 1850, Champagne became popular, and its average sales increased to almost 20 million bottles a year.

How is Champagne Made?

The Champagne production process consists of the following steps:

  • Harvest

The grapes for Champagne are usually hand-picked in August, September, and October. The harvest time entirely depends on the ripeness of the grapes.

The producers do not pick the grapes with the help of a machine. Instead, they use hand-picked grapes to ensure their best quality and ripeness for obtaining a good Champagne.

After picking grapes, they undergo the pressing process carefully to obtain clear and white juice.

  • First fermentation

The juice poured in the tank undergoes the first fermentation process to obtain a still acidic Wine completely fermented dry. Some Wine producers perform fermentation in the barrel, and a difficult technique is to master sparkling Wine.

  • Assemblage

Assemblage is an art of blending. Still, White Wine mixed with reserve Wines to create a base Wine for Champagne. For instance, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay combined to obtain a Champagne. This process occurs five months after the harvest.

  • Second fermentation

A mixture of yeast, nutrients, and sugar is added to the Wine and then put in the bottle for further fermentation in the cellar. It produces alcohol along with carbon dioxide slowly.

It is necessary to save carbon dioxide from escaping the bottle to obtain sparkling Wine as a result.

  • Ageing

During the several months of the fermentation process, yeast cells die. But, the Champagne remains in the cellar to cool for several years. As a result, it has a toasty and yeasty character.

During the ageing period, yeast cells split open. Then, they spill into a solution presenting complex and yeasty Champagne flavours. Usually, the best and expensive Champagne's ageing completes in five years or more.

  • Riddling

After the ageing process is completed, there is a process of removing dead yeast cells. It is popular with the name Riddling. The champagne bottle placed in a holder at a 75-degree angle gets turned 1/8th by the riddler.

This way, dead yeast cells float into the bottleneck and get removed subsequently. The champagne bottles placed in racks with bottlenecks face downward direction.

  • Disgorging

The final step of Champagne production is disgorgement. There, the champagne bottle's neck gets frozen in the ice salt bath. As a result, There is plug formation of frozen Wine with dead yeast cells.

Then, the cap was removed to force the frozen plug out with the carbon dioxide's pressure leaving a clear Champagne behind.

  • The Dosage

The mixture of brandy, White Wine, and sugar added for adjusting the sweetness level of Wine decides the nature of Champagne. It can be of Brut Nature, Extra Dry, Extra Brut, Dry, Brut, Semi-Dry, or Doux.

  • The Corking

The bottle corked and wired down ensures the carbon dioxide's high internal pressure in the Champagne.

Is Champagne Best Cold or Warm?

There is no set temperature to drink Champagne but most people have it at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. It is a common temperature that enables Champagne to express itself without closing off aromas or flavours in cold.

There is no need to go colder than this, but in case you prefer colder Champagne you can go for 5 to 6 degrees Celsius. But temperature lower than this will make Champagne lose its taste.

Then, all the aromas will get blocked and you can smell only ice instead of Champagne. After tasting Champagne at different temperatures you will notice that some Champagnes will taste and perform better at warm temperatures.

But make sure not to go warmer than room temperature. It would be better to pour Champagne in flute at 8 degrees Celsius then warm it with your hands to experience its best aromas and flavours.
