History of Tequila

Tequila has a long and storied history that starts with the Aztec Indians in Central Mexico. They created a fermented beverage from the agave plant that they called “pulque”. When the Spaniards arrived in the 1500s, they discovered pulque and soon developed a taste for it.

However, they also began to distill the drink to make it stronger. The first distilled tequila was produced in the town of Tecate in 1666. It wasn't until 1758 that tequila was commercially produced in the town of Jalisco. From there, it began to be exported to other parts of Mexico and then to other countries via the Manila trade route. Today, tequila is enjoyed all over the world and is an essential part of Mexican culture. Whether you enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or in a margarita, there's no doubt that tequila has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

How is Tequila Made?

Tequila is a Mexican spirit made from the fermented juice of the agave plant. The agave, also known as the Maguey, is a member of the lily family and is native to Mexico. The agave takes between eight and twelve years to mature, and it is the only ingredient in tequila. Once the agave is harvested, the plants are stripped of their leaves, revealing the core, or piña. The piñas are then chopped into small pieces and fermented. After fermentation, the liquid is distilled and bottled.
