The Jack Daniel's brand was registered by Jack's nephew Lemuel Owen Daniels in 1866. Jack Daniel used his middle name 'Daniel' as his last name to avoid problems with his uncle, who also went by 'Jack'. Jack Daniel learned the art of distilling from Preacher Nathan "Nearest" Green, slaveholder and master distiller. Jack Daniel never moved from the original registered distillery location.
